v1.2 is not published or available on npm

I know you supposedly published v1.2.0 but I don't see it on npm or npmx. Maybe the same you had with v1.1.1?

it was just waiting in npm's new staging area as there was a bug with losing provenance.

however, it seems already staged versions were doomed anyway. so i published 1.2.1 now to reintroduce provenance

This error happened while installing the dependencies of vitest@4.1.7

Trust checks are based solely on publish date, not semver. A package cannot be installed if any earlier-published version had stronger trust evidence. Earlier versions had trusted publisher, but this version has provenance attestation. A trust downgrade may indicate a supply chain incident.

pnpm has 3 trust level:

If the publised user is a personal npm account, then it's level 1 Provenance, however, 1.1.1 is clearly in level 2 Trusted Publisher since it's published by github actions.

To get back, you must stop using stage publish command for now.

Updated: I followed pnpm/pnpm#11887. At least pnpm's design was previously correct, and there should be no proper solution for this at pnpm side?

I understand the rationale. However, does npm currently provide the necessary metadata for tools to distinguish between a 'staged' publish and a standard 'provenance-only' publish? As far as I know, the answer is no. This suggests that the staged publishing workflow is not yet fully mature.

Here are two examples:

As a result, false positives are bound to happen in downstream tools like pnpm, taze, and others. For now, I would recommend against switching to staged publishing, as adopting it for a popular library can cause unnecessary friction and headaches for the community.

For me, I am not OK to add a bunch of packages into trustPolicyExcude in the next few days (and remove them later), and also not OK turning of trustPolicy

indeed npm is at fault here and doesn't provide any metadata to know staged publishing was used.

that breaks pnpm and various other tools.
